Lime Pointing

We are experts in pointing with lime. Whether it is flint pointing, repointing brickwork or repointing stone, we pride ourselves on our attention to detail when carrying out pointing works. This means matching new mortars with old both visually (colour & texture) and performance (strength).

We always colour match our pointing mortar to like the existing mortar. We do this by blending local aggregates, limes and our experience. We also take great care that the texture of the mortar is also similar, so where particles of sand and gravel are visible we will mimic this in the new mortar mix. We also finish the mortar so that it appears aged, rather than a smooth and trowelled look.

Regarding strength, old historic mortars were generally given a 'feebly hydraulic' strength class. Modern lime mortars can often be significantly stronger than historic mortars which can have implications on the surrounding masonry. We take care to only use sympathetic mortar mixes. The after care of mortars, once placed, is also key for strength. We therefore ensure the mortars are cured correctly, preventing rapid drying by keeping mortar damp and covering works with hessian.
