We are specialists in lime rendering, with extensive experience working on both cob and brick walls. Our services cover every aspect of re-rendering in lime, including the removal of existing renders, repair of the underlying structure, and finishing with limewash or breathable paints.
Because rendering is external, it is governed by weather and temperature. Lime rendering can therefore only be carried out during frost-free months, typically between May and September.
For older buildings, breathability is essential. Lime allows moisture to escape naturally, protecting the fabric of the structure. In recent decades, this principle was often overlooked, leading to damage caused by impermeable cement renders and modern barrier paints, which trap moisture within the walls.
Much of our work involves removing these inappropriate cement renders and replacing them with lime. We take great care during removal to minimise damage to the underlying substrate. This process can reveal hidden issues, such as decayed timber lintels or previous poor repairs, which we are skilled to address before continuing with the lime rendering.
Our renders are usually applied in two or three coats, depending on the requirements of the building. Each coat is carefully placed, protected, and allowed to dry fully before the next is applied. Top coats can be finished in a variety of styles, from formal elevations with faux ashlar markings to the softer rounded finish typical of cob cottages. Whatever the project, we take pride in ensuring the final appearance is sympathetic and well detailed.
Lime render may be left unfinished, but traditionally it was limewashed. Today, breathable silicate paints provide an alternative. We can advise on the most suitable option for your property and apply the finish accordingly.
