We are specialists in pointing with lime. Whether it is flint pointing, repointing brickwork, or repointing stone, we take pride in our attention to detail. Our approach ensures that new mortars are carefully matched to the old, both in appearance (colour and texture) and in performance (strength).
We always colour-match our pointing mortar to the existing mortar. This is achieved by blending local aggregates, limes, and our expertise. Equal care is given to texture, so where sand or gravel particles are visible, we replicate this in the new mix. Our mortars are also finished to appear naturally aged, avoiding the smooth, overly trowelled look.
In terms of strength, historic mortars were typically classified as ‘feebly hydraulic’. Modern lime mortars can be considerably stronger, which may adversely affect surrounding masonry.
For this reason, we use only sympathetic mortar mixes suited to the building. Aftercare is equally important for durability; once placed, we ensure mortars are cured correctly by keeping them damp and covering with hessian to prevent rapid drying.
